Jagshemash! That’s right bitches, I went and saw Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan. I figured I had best see it since I failed several exams due to staying up past my bed time watching deleted scenes and other miscellaneous clips on the web. I was planning on going last weekend when it opened here in L.A. but I was too busy learning all about DNA and genetics! I made an attempt not to view any content from the movie that was floating around on the web although I did watch clips tagged “deleted scenes”, as I thought they were safe from spoiling the film. I was wrong. Many of the clips I had seen were in the movie, which really pissed me off. I will try my hardest to review this movie without giving too much away to those that haven’t seen it yet. Anyways, submitted for your review is my review of Borat: blah blah blah of Kazakhstan whatever. I went in to this movie with high expectations and I feel I was let down somewhat. Don’t get me wrong, it was hilarious, but not as good as I thought it was going to be. I will get the negative remarks out of the way first. My major gripe was with the interactions the main character had with unsuspecting people. In the movie he has interactions with a car salesman, a driving instructor, a humorist, some feminists, a dining club, some college kids…and a few more. I felt that he had some gold with the feminists but it never really developed. I don’t know if it was due to editing (that’s a nice way of saying censoring) or what, but the whole bit seemed dry and rushed. I have seen many clips of Borat on The Ali G. Show and I know what he is capable of, but I feel that he did not live up to his potential in this movie. This is unfortunate because there is little chance of a sequel with his world wide popularity. O.k. so we got that out of the so lets talk about the funny shit (which was in no short supply). Despite its shortcomings, this movie did not disappoint on the laughter scale. The shock value alone of this film was well worth the matinee price (and possibly the after matinee student discount price). The whole movie is about Borat and his producer coming to America to do research to take back to their country. While here they get side tracked and decide to find Pamela Anderson to make “sexy time”. Since the original plan was to film in New York, this meant a road trip to California (they would not fly for fear of the Jews responsible for 911). Soon the two set off in an old ice cream truck to conquer America. A classic scene is one in which Borat is staying at a bed in breakfast ran by Jews. Since the Jews are blamed for all the evil in the world (by the people of Kazakhstan) this creates a humorous scenario. Only some one of the Jewish faith could have pulled off so many anti-Semitic jokes as were in this movie. Another highlight is when Borat and his producer are wrestling naked. How often do you get to see a naked fat guy sit on some ones face? Please, if you have an answer for that question I do not want to hear it. We then get to see the pair run through the hotel in all their glory. Other highlights include Borat getting drunk with college kids in an RV, Borat getting driving lessons and Borat visiting a Pentecostal church rally. There are several other notable jokes and gags but I do not want to spoil the movie for those of you who have not seen it yet. The only movie that made me laugh harder as of late was Nacho Libre. If you haven’t seen this movie yet then go fucking see it already. I recommend seeing it a few times to catch all the quick site gags. Grade = A- -= Bagoda =- |
